About
To celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2025, the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce has created a holiday art installation of 100 life-sized nutcrackers which are scattered throughout Westerly, Pawcatuck, Stonington, Mystic, and Voluntown! All of the nutcrackers can be viewed at the United Theatre on November 30th. Then they will be on display throughout the community, making a fun trail for your family to discover. Each nutcracker is an original work of art, hand painted by a variety of talented local artists. The themes vary from classic Victorian Christmas to Candyland, Heat Meiser and the Grinch! Many small businesses and community organizations also teamed up as a staff to create clever nutcrackers that represent their business. Enjoy your visit to see all of these beautiful Christmas creations, but please don't touch the art. Enter to win holiday prizes by scanning the bar code on signage at each location.

History
The tradition of collecting nutcrackers became popular in the 1950s after soldiers stationed in Germany brought nutcrackers home from Christmas markets. The popularity of the ballet The Nutcracker Suite also contributed to the rise in demand for nutcrackers. Thousands of people adore these heirloom holiday decorations and some even keep theirs visible year round. In recent years, a trend has developed to acquire commercially produced nutcrackers and then strip them and repaint to customize to your home decor. They can be a striking compliment to the Christmas tree or provide a beautiful display flanking the front door.
